Writing Prompt # 8: Part 1

I found an interesting prompt. It’s one dealing with poetry instead of the short story (or a scene in a short story) prompts I usually do. Anyway, since the prompt deals with the seven deadly sins (see below) I might return back to this prompt in the future. So my challenge to you this week is: 1) Write your own poem, if you are so inclined and 2) Guess at which deadly sin I wrote about. For those of you unfamiliar with the deadly sins, they are as follows: Pride, Lust, Envy, Greed, Anger, Gluttony, Sloth.

For those of you who are curious, yes it is a sonnet. It’s a Petrarchan sonnet. I was experimenting. What have I learned? Sonnets are really hard to write.

Week 8

(Once again, found this on the Promptuarium blog!)

It is not enough, nor will it ever be.

This old house of mine on a tumbled street

Where poor men risk much to gamble and cheat

The first thing lost was the rotted church key.

I did not pull an apple from the tree!

I did not feel its crunch or taste its meat,

Did not want to know if Knowledge tasted sweet!

This unfair life was forced upon me.

Yet you live in a sea of emerald grass,

Your house bedecked with a glorious silk

A pompous smile plastered on your round face.

With an upturned nose down my street you’ll pass.

Always sneering down at me and my ilk.

But of better traits than mine? There is no trace.
